An AI model specifically trained to support psychologists and physicians working with obesity patients has been released on Hugging Face. Leanly_AI is a large language model that provides structured, evidence-informed psychological support for individuals facing emotional challenges during weight management. It integrates population health data from the UK Biobank to deliver responses that are clinically aware and focused on reducing stigma.

The project comes from the endocrinology and general practice departments at the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Fuzhou University. Core developers Xin Ning and Wen Junping built the model to move beyond generic encouragement and offer more precise, empathetic communication. Their goal is to help care teams address anxiety, guilt, low motivation, and other psychological barriers that often accompany obesity treatment.

Focus on clinical weight psychology

Key advantages
  • Deep integration with UK Biobank health data.
  • Standardized support for obesity-related emotions.
  • Reduces harm caused by weight stigma.
  • Flags early warning signs of distress.
  • Encourages professional mental health screening.
  • Improves treatment adherence over time.
  • Assists doctors with structured, caring language.

The primary users are physicians, dietitians, and obesity clinics that want to add a psychological safety layer to their practice. Coaches and care coordinators can also use it to better understand patient emotional states and respond in ways that lower shame. Ultimately, it helps individuals in treatment feel heard and supported without replacing human professionals.

Behind the clinical design

The model’s responses are built around clinical logic, not just conversational fluency. Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots, Leanly_AI was tailored for a single medical scenario and a specific patient group, which makes its replies more medically cautious. The developers state clearly that the tool is meant to assist, not replace, mental health providers or physicians.
